Research Article: The Prevalence of weight Imbalance Among Children of Age 6-7 years: A Comparative Study Between Two Metros.

Abstract

The increase in childhood obesity over the past decades, together with associated health problems and cost, is rising gave concern. A study was undertaken with an objective to assess the prevalence of obesity among children, to find the causative factors for obesity and to educate the mothers of obese children to lead a healthy life style. Results were drawn from statistical analysis by involving a study with 100 subjects. Finally the mothers of the obese subjects were educated on healthy eating, consequences of obesity in adult hood, and importance of physical activity

Summary

Childhood years are of great importance because the child develops both physically and psychologically. Subjects for the study were chosen from two cities. High income group school (HIGS) and low income group school (LIGS) from each of the two metros were adopted. Subjects were assessed upon Nutritional Anthropometric measurements, Physical activity assessment and Daily calorie intake by means of questionnaire and case studies. Subjects were classified according to Nutritional status by using Body Mass Index (BMI), weight for age and height for age with regard to Indian standards. Statistical analysis were drawn and concluded that out of 100 subjects 6 were obese who were all from High income group Bangalore and 9 were overweight out of which 3 were from High income group Bangalore and 6 were from High income group Chennai. From analysis of statistical conclusions were drawn that higher socio-economic status accompanying life style modifications, improper eating behaviors, low physical activity and watching television for more hours and long duration of sleep could be causative factors of obesity..

The underlying causes of the obesity epidemic were observed from the research and then Intervention programs were planned to educate mothers. Early Obesity is a risk factor for Non-communicable diseases like Diabetes; hypertension and cardio vascular disorders that were once seen almost exclusively in adults are now being seen in children and with increasing frequency. Obesity affects many systems of the body – cardio vascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and orthopedic-and although adult obesity damages each, childhood obesity often exacerbates the damage. For example, the process that leads to a heart attack or stoke often takes decades to develop into overt diseases. Obese children may thus suffer the adverse effects of cardio vascular disease at a younger age than their parents would despite the advent of new drugs to treat some of these problems. They also suffer from higher rates of depression, greater difficulty in peer relationships, and poorer quality of life than their normal weight counter parts. . To inculcate healthy life style and eating habits in children becomes very important and parents play an important role in developing good habits

Research On Obesity

In India Obesity has become a epidemic disease, affecting high socio economic groups. It has become a major issue, as a Nutritionist I have seen large groups of people coming to us for weight loss programmes. There is a need to adress this issue, how to fight obesity? Proper diet works but not alone, good exercise works but not alone, dietary supplement works but not alone.
But a person can loose weight by following the above three principles togeather.

Yes,L-Carnitine is an amino acid and also called as Vitamin has gain importance as an important weight loss dietary supplement. There are many supporting scientific studies that this amino acid like substance present inside our body helps to burn excess fat, Keeps heart healthy, improve insulin sensitivity and many more.

This gave an interest to me to do research on this molecule which is naturally present inside our body and to do research on its functions.

This study will be conducted in Chennai. The study will be conducted among 500 -600 Obese subjects and will be divided into groups and will be sampled.

ARE YOU GETTING THE RIGHT BRAIN NUTRIENTS???

Know yourself by taking this quiz……
- Do you become Lethargic soon?
- Do you have reduced memory?
- Do you get more stress?
- Do you have low concentration at work?
- Do you get depressed often?
If you have answered yes to most of the above questions then your brain is deficient of essential nutrients.
Brain communicates with your body through neurons and neurotransmitters in order to perform important functions. The neurotransmitters are made up of amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Hence they have to be supplied daily through diet and by supplements if necessary.

Important nutrients for Brain are Choline a vitamin like substance, Vitamin B1, B2, B5, B6, B12, Folic acid, Anti-oxidants, and minerals like potassium, sodium, chloride, and magnesium. Carnitine is also an essential nutrient that supplies constant energy to your brain and also burns fat in your body; it is naturally produced inside the body from amino acids and studies have shown that additional supplementation is more beneficial.

Take plenty of fruits and vegetables daily, at least 3-4 servings per day for your minerals and vitamins, sources of carnitine are red meat, fish, egg, milk and milk products. Rich food sources of choline include lecithin, peanuts, wheat germ, and soy foods. Choline is also found in good levels in Brussels sprouts, oatmeal, soybeans, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, and potatoes.

Brain should get a constant source of high quality nutrition to boost your mental alertness, keep away from stress, increase concentration, promote learning, enhance both short-term and long-term memory, and keep your senses sharp. Keep a check to fuel your Brain daily with the above foods and create more success at your workplace and also at home.

Optimal Brain Nutrients, Optimal Energy.”

BENEFITS OF SMALL FREQUENT MEALS

To achieve superb shape and maximum performance, forgo the usual ‘three square” approach to meals. Active people must fuel themselves through the day. That means frequent small meals and snacks every two to three hours is preferred rather than three large meals a day.
There are numerous research studies that explain the benefits to eating small, frequent meals and snacks. For example, eating multiple meals increases “thermogenesis”, the production of heat by the body as it digest and absorb food. During thermogenesis, metabolism steps up, and your body processes nutrients more efficiently. Increased meal frequency also stimulates fat burning, improves the body’s use of protein, preserves lean muscle, and reduces appetite.
Another advantage of multiple meals is mental performance. Regular timed meals help you think and process information more effectively, increase your attention span, and boost your mood.
So people start your day with energizer drink, boosting breakfast, healthy mid-morning snack, appetizing lunch, yummy snacks in the evening and nutritious dinner. Try to include the above six meals daily in your diet as part of your regular activities to lead a active and healthy lifestyle.

Journey through Bodyfuelz

I am a nutritionist working for Bio-Bodyfuelz, a sister concern of Tablets India ltd. This company manufactures food supplements/ Ergogenic aids for athletes, body building trainers and also for fitness conscious people who work out at gyms regularly. My boss is a performance nutritionist who did his MSC in food biochemistry from Scotland. He is a professional nutritionist for top athletes, big shots and also film actors, and also working as a Marketing manager for Body Fuelz. It is from him that I have learnt so many concepts of nutrition which I was not aware of. Initially I was a person who was against supplements, but after going through research and literature I understood the importance of supplements. You all must know, an athlete who performs in Olympics consumes nearly 30 supplements 10 days before the events. Really you can’t believe this even I was surprised too. But, I have seen athletes including small children coming to our office getting the right diet and supplements for enhanced performance before their events. They have come back with medals and thank us for the mantra. I do lot of research studies as part of my job, our company is launching a new product based on glucosamine and I am doing research studies on this product. Its really very interesting.

Today i have to plan a diet for a women from Delhi who want to loose weight. She is rich women, who can do anything and everything to loose weight, she weighs 103kgs and her ideal body weight is 63kgs. So she has to reduce nearly 40kgs. She wanted to loose her weight in just 6months. Really it is a challenging task. When I spoke to this lady regarding her regular diets, it was to my surprise that she lives only on supplements as her breakfast. She got fascinated to these supplements, thinking that only supplement can help to burn fat.
In today’s world everyone are fitness conscious but they don’t practice in right way, I understood that knowledge about nutrition and fitness has not been carried properly to public. Every one must understand that no one food or no one supplement can provide nutrients to our body. To lead a healthy life the mantra is right nutrition+right exercise+right supplement.
